Beauty Tip Tuesday - 11 Ways To Make Your Eyes Pop

11 Ways To Make Your Eyes Pop

1. If you have a hard time using soft eyeliner pencils, draw a thick line onto your hand, use a stiff eye brush to pick up the pigment and then apply to your eye.

2. Need eye drops but don’t want to ruin your makeup? Breathe air in through your nose as you drop them into your eyes. Your tear ducts will suck in the drops before they have a chance to fall down your face.

3. Use a flesh colored liner on the water rim of your lower lash line to make eyes look bigger and brighter.

4. Apply a shimmery champagne color in the inner corner of your eyes to brighten your whole face.

5. Apply highlighter onto your brow bone.

6. Swap out your neutral black or brown liner for a brightly colored one instead.

7. Apply concealer to your under-eye circles after foundation (not before) to better camouflage them.

8. Use eye shadow made for your eye color.

9. To correct eye makeup mistakes or sharpen a cat eye, dip a Q-tip in eye makeup remover and erase the offending makeup.

10. To make your eye color stand out, apply black liner around the entire eye, including the water line.

11. Instead of swiping on eye shadow, press the color into your eyelid with a brush or finger. This will give your lids a more pigmented look.

Health and Fitness Tip #117 - 11 Really Good Ways To Fix Anxiety Without Drugs

11 Really Good Ways To Fix Anxiety Without Drugs

1. Lavender

Lavender has long been recognized for its potent medicinal powers, whether in its essential oil form or simply as a dried herb. Not only can lavender help to improve your sleep, alleviate headaches, relieve burns and cuts and ease stomach pain, it has also been scientifically proven to help against stress and anxiety.

A study published in the Journal of Psychiatry and Clinical Practice found that supplementing with 80-milligram capsules of lavender essential oil lowered stress, anxiety, depression and a range of other “negative” emotions and moods. Not only that, researchers showed that these benefits were experienced without any adverse side effects. Another study compared lavender to a common prescription anti-anxiety drug. Researchers found that lavender was more effective than the drug at lowering anxiety on a daily basis.

2. Dirt

Yup, plain old dirt may just be one of your best ways to get rid of that pesky anxiety. Most people experience an elevated sense of self and a stress-lowering effect when gardening or working with their hands in the outdoors. Some of this effect is likely due to the stress-alleviating effect of simply getting outside. But scientists have also found that there is actually a specific species of bacteria found in soil which can lower anxiety and improve your mood. This bacteria, Mycobacterium vaccae, helps to release serotonin (a lack of which is associated with depression and anxiety) when it comes into contact with your skin. So, more dirt — provided it’s organic — may mean a happier you!

3. Frankincense

Frankincense is second only to lavender as an essential oil that is dynamite against anxiety. The calming effect of frankincense essential oil is thought to occur due to its incensole acetate content. A 2008 study suggested that this compound could lower both anxiety and depression. Whatever the reason, diffusing some frankincense essential oil when you’re feeling low or stressed may go a long way towards balancing your emotions and calming your anxious mind.

Whatever the reason, diffusing some frankincense essential oil when you’re feeling low or stressed may go a long way towards balancing your emotions and calming your anxious mind.

4. Chamomile

Many people know that a warm cup of chamomile tea in the evening can promote a feeling of calmness and make getting to sleep a whole lot easier. That’s because chamomile contains compounds which enable it to fix anxiety naturally. It also has a wonderful mellow flavor, making it a great late-night beverage.

5. Limit Social Media

Social media platforms like Facebook may seem relatively harmless on the surface. But studies show that social media can be harmful as well as helpful. Many people become ensnared in the ongoing competition for friendship and popularity that is the guiding force behind Facebook and other social platforms. This allows it to increase our levels of anxiety, fuel depression and generally just add a whole lot more stress into our lives. Taking a break from Facebook every now and then can make a big difference to your anxiety level.

6. Put Pen to Paper

It may seem a little too simple to be true, but simply writing your worries down on a piece of paper can help to lower your levels of anxiety. The physical act of committing your worries, concerns or plans to paper helps to transfer them from your mind into the physical world. Here, they still exist, but they exist outside of your head and stop nagging you. One of the best things you can do is to leave a pen and pad on your bedside table. You can roll over and scribble thoughts down if you’re lying there struggling to sleep at night.

7. Green Tea

Green tea contains an amino acid called L-theanine. Research has shown that it not only reduces levels of anxiety in the brain, but also lowers heart rate and regulate blood pressure. A 2011 study published in the Journal of Functional Foods found that patients with anxiety issues were calmer and more focused if they supplemented with 200 milligrams of L-theanine prior to a test.

8. Lemon balm

Not only does lemon balm smell amazing, that rich aroma is just the start of this potent herb’s healing capacity. Lemon balm has been used for hundreds of years to alleviate stress and anxiety, while helping to achieve a faster, deeper sleep. And modern science agrees. A 2004 study published in the Journal of Psychosomatic Medicine found that patients supplementing with 600 milligrams of lemon balm extract reduced negative mood effects. It significantly increasing feelings of calmness and reducing feelings of anxiety.

9. Exercise

Come on, you didn’t think you were going to fix your anxiety by just sitting in front of the TV sipping herbal teas did you? If you’re dealing with anxiety issues, it’s official: you need to get outside. And one of the best ways to do that is to exercise, in any shape or form.

Head out for a run along the waterfront, a bike through the park, a swim in your local pool at the beach or simply a casual stroll through town on a sunny afternoon. Exercise releases dopamine, a “pleasure hormone” which leaves you feeling amazing. In the process, it expels all that pent-up anxiety and stress. Oh, and your body looks better when you exercise, just in case you needed more motivation!

10. Meditation

You were probably expecting this one to be in here somewhere. There’s absolutely no doubt that meditation is one of the most effective natural fixes for anxiety. In fact, meditation is designed for just that purpose. Practicing just 10 minutes of guided meditation every day will make a huge difference to lowering your levels of stress. It will help and release all that nagging anxiety that’s been plaguing you all this time. And if you do it just before bed, you’ll find yourself calmer and much more able to slip into an effortless deep sleep.

11. Yoga

Whether it’s the exercise component that gets you feeling great, or controlled breathing aspect, yoga is anxiety’s worst nightmare. Multiple studies show that practicing yoga on a regular basis can help to lower stress and anxiety, increase quality of life and improve mental health. Not a bad trade-off for some gentle stretching and a bit of deep breathing.

Tasty Thursday - Banana Bunt Cakes

Banana Bunt Cakes

This weekend my parents came up to go to a PSU hockey game with Rich and I and to Celebrate my Aunts Birthday.

My Aunt, like me has celiacs and can't do normal birthday cakes or cupcakes. And she LOVES my banana bread I make. So instead of making a cake or going to an EXPENSIVE bakery for the to make a gluten free cake, I made her individual Banana Bunt Cakes. I made enough for EVERYONE to have one. And I topped them with her favorite icing!! Peanut Butter, of course! haha

The Bunt Cakes were a HIT! Everyone LOVED having their own individual cake and they loved the ICING the best, or at least my aunt and I did!

Recipe for the Banana Bunt Cake
Makes 6 Banana Cakes
350 Calories Per Cake with Icing
290 Calories per cake with NO icing

Ingredients

4 bananas
7 eggs
1/4 c coconut oil, melted
2 dropperfuls of vanilla stevia
3/4 c Almond Meal
2 T Cinnamon
1 t pink salt
3/4 t baking soda

Directions:

Preheat oven to 350 degrees
Grease 9x5 inch loaf pan
Combine bananas, coconut oil, vanilla, and eggs in food processor
Mix in almond flour, cinnamon, salt, and baking soda
Allow to sit for 3-4 minutes for batter to thicken
Pour batter into loaf pan
Bake for 45-55 minutes

3 INGREDIENT PEANUT BUTTER MOUSSE FROSTING

Ingredients
1 can full fat coconut milk (alternatively, 1/2 can coconut cream)*
3-4 Tbsp salted, natural creamy peanut butter
2-3 Tbsp agave nectar, maple syrup or powdered sugar (or honey if not vegan)

Instructions

Chill your coconut milk overnight. In the morning, without shaking or tipping, remove the lid and scoop out the solid cream from the top into a chilled bowl. Leave the liquid in the bottom of the can and reserve it for use in smoothies, baked goods, etc. (If your coconut milk didn't harden, see this post for tips on how to save it.)

Using a mixer, beat until creamed together, light and fluffy - about 45 seconds.

Add peanut butter, starting with 2 Tbsp and adding from there to desired taste.

Add sweetener of choice to desired sweetness, observing that the more liquid you add the less firm the mousse will be.

Either use immediately as a spreadable frosting, or chill for several hours to let it set and firm up as a mousse.

Eat as a mousse topped with plain coconut whipped cream, bananas or chocolate sauce. Alternatively, use as a dip for fruit/baked goods. If using as a frosting, don't frost your muffins, cookies and cakes, etc., until just before serving as it needs to be chilled right up until serving.

Reserve leftovers in a covered container in the fridge. Will keep for up to 1 week.

*NOTE: Not all coconut milk is equal. The brands I know and recommend are Thai Kitchen, Trader Joe's (coconut cream, canned), and Whole Foods 365. Other brands source coconut milk from other regions of the world where the coconuts mysteriously have different fat make-ups, which can (and often do) affect the consistency of this mousse.

Motivational Wednesday - Do you have Excusitis?!?!

So let's get REAL......

.
Do you have EXCUSITIS?
.
Huh? Is that even a thing? What is it your asking.
.
I am here to tell you it's real! And most of us have it! It's the failure Disease!
.
Are you full of excuses? Do you think your too old? Too young? Not healthy enough? Or have something "wrong" with you? Do you think you are not smart enough? That others are smarter, better trained? Do you think others are just "LUCKIER"? That you have the WORST luck?
.
Guess what?!? I am about to burst your bubble! So stop reading if you don't want to hear the truth.
.
Those thoughts are EXCUSES!
.
You are only as old as you feel! Which means if you feel 80 your body is going to act 80, whether your 25, 45, or 80. But if you FEEL 25 then your body will act like a 25 year old, whether your 25, 45, or 80! In the words of Tony Horton, AGING is for IDIOTS!
.
If you BELIEVE you aren't smart of enough then you won't be! There are tons of people that are HUGELY successful without a college degree! It's not because they are smarter, it's because they believed they could be successful no matter what! You can be a genius and not be successful if you don't believe that you can succeed!
.
Luck! There is NO such thing as luck! Hard work, consistency, and dedication is what is going to get you where you want to go! So stop saying they are luckier than you are! No they just want it badder than you do!
.
And health, honestly, we all have some ailment wrong with us. But if you want something bad enough, better life, lose weight, etc, you will find a way. Refuse to talk about your health. Believe that you ARE healthy! The less bad you talk about your health the better you will feel.
.
Today rid yourself of the disease EXCUSITIS!
.
Stop allowing your excuses to dictate your life! Take charge! You can do it! I believe in you!!

Beauty Tip Tuesday - How to Make a Lip Exfoliating Scrub At Home

How to Make a Lip Exfoliating Scrub At Home

In the chilly months the air gets dry, and our lips suffer for it. As they get chapped, they often get covered in a layer of crusty, peeling, annoying dead skin that usually ends up getting bitten or tugged off-and that doesn’t do anybody any favors. Now your lips are bleeding and they’re sore and they are raw and soon they will be crusty again. It’s certainly a debacle, but one that I have found can be avoided by making a simple lip exfoliator. I used to purchase my scrub, and then I realized it’s actually the easiest thing in the world to make.

You will need…
-A teaspoon of brown sugar or cane sugar or coconut sugar
-A teaspoon of coconut oil
-A teeny tiny little drop of vanilla (it makes it smell yummy, but isn’t necessary.)
-A small container

Directions
1.       Mix a tablespoon of brown sugar with just enough honey (or olive oil) to get it to stick together. Once a week (twice at the very max) rub the scrub onto your lips, vigorously enough to loosen the dead skin.

2.       Let it sit for 1 minute, and then wipe off with a damp washcloth. Apply lip balm after use.

Again, don’t overuse this, but it is a great tool when it comes to dealing with chapped, peeling, lips. If you like you can combine the different sugars, but any will do the trick.

Health and Fitness Tip #116 - 16 Strange Cravings and What they Mean

16 Strange Cravings and What they Mean

Have you ever made a special late-night trip down to your local supermarket for a big tub of ice cream? Or perhaps needed chocolate so bad that you simply could not do a single thing without getting your hands on some? Have you ever had a hankering for a certain type of fast food that would not go away until you ordered a feast at your go-to fast food joint?

If you’re human, chances are you have. These are what we call food cravings and they can come in some seriously weird and wacky forms. You might be going about your daily business and out of nowhere… wham! The strange craving hits and it’s a case of consume or be consumed.

It turns out that this is far from a simple case of hunger. Hunger is determined by a straightforward system of caloric intake and metabolism. When your body metabolizes all of the food you ate from the previous meal, your leptin levels drop. A decrease in this hormone stimulates your stomach to release another hormone called ghrelin, which signals to your brain that you need more food.

Cravings do not fit into this calorie versus metabolism equation. While hunger is your stomach’s way of telling the brain that you need more food in order to survive, cravings are the brain’s way of telling you that you’re missing something specific. When your brain generates strong or strange cravings for certain kinds of food or consumables, you need to listen up… it’s trying to pass on a message!

While these cravings may seem like a simple case of your “sweet tooth” kicking in, there’s often a lot more to the story. If you crave something sweet but find your hand reaching straight for the chocolate, it may be that you are in fact deficient in magnesium. That’s because chocolate is one of the highest food sources of magnesium (the dark kinds of chocolate, anyway).

By examining your strange cravings you can seek to fine-tune your body and help it achieve optimum health. Here are some of the most common food cravings and what they mean.

1. Ice

Surprisingly, ice is one of the more common strange cravings and is often associated with an iron deficiency. Sucking on a cube of ice or some icy slush helps to alleviate inflammation in the mouth, which can signify anemia.

2. Chocolate

We already touched upon this one, which is actually the most common non-drug craving in the United States. Getting a sudden urge to reach for the chocolate can signify a magnesium deficiency, considering raw cacao is an excellent source of magnesium. That being said, nuts are also high in magnesium, so if you’re not feeling the same way about these crunchy numbers, it could just be a sugar addiction.

3. Salty foods

Not too far behind chocolate on the popularity scale is salt, which almost anyone can attest to. Having a strong desire for salty snacks can suggest a serious chloride deficiency. It can be solved the healthy way by eating plenty of celery, olives, kelp or simply a high-quality salt like Himalayan pink salt. Because unrefined sea salt contains a range of vitamins, minerals and nutrients which our bodies need to thrive, that salt craving could suggest that you need to replace your nasty table salt for some health-friendly salt.

4. Cheese

If you’ve got an unexplained yearning for cheese, don’t worry, you’re not alone! People who crave cheese may be lacking in either calcium or essential fatty acids. Because cheese is a potent source of both of these, you’re better off giving into your craving and carving off a hearty slice. The more natural cheese the better, and as always, grass-fed is a big plus.

5. Lemons

There are few things more beneficial than a glass of water with half a fresh lemon squeezed in. If you get this craving on a regular basis, you may be lacking in vitamin C.

6. Pasta or white bread

If you have a specific strange craving for pasta or white bread, it may signal a chromium deficiency. Unfortunately, these products are also generally nutrient deficient and loaded with gluten, so here’s a few healthier sources of chromium:

Onions
Romaine lettuce
Tomato
Cinnamon
Apples
Sweet potato

 7. Toast

This might seem like a very specific craving, but it’s more common that you might think! If you’re gravitating towards the toaster, you might have a nitrogen deficiency. While toast is delicious, it’s also a source of carbs which you don’t really need, and there are plenty of other healthier choices to boost your nitrogen stores. These include dark leafy greens, seeds, nuts and certain legumes.

 8. Potato chips

What’s the one thing that chips all have in common? A lot of salt. And as we explained earlier, a hankering for salty snacks, like potato chips, means you might have a chloride deficiency. Break out the celery and olives, or simply sprinkle more Himalayan pink salt on your meals. Your chip craving should clear right up!

9. Red meat

Constant cravings for red meat could be your brain trying to tell you that more iron is needed. Iron deficiency can certainly be cured by getting more red meat in your diet, and I for one love a good slab of juicy steak! But make sure you’re getting your red meat from healthy animals, especially those raised on organic pastures (grass-fed). If you’re not so into red meat, you can get iron from several other sources, including beans, legumes, figs, spinach and cherries.

10. Popcorn

Yup, it’s a thing. If you’ve got an unexplained popcorn craving, you could be suffering from cortisone fluctuations. Cortisone is considered the “stress hormone,” so adopting practices which alleviate stress should be your top priority. These include meditation, deep breathing, eating plenty of leafy greens and getting out into nature as much as possible.

11. Burnt food

We’re getting stranger and stranger! If you’ve got a strange craving for overcooked or burnt food, there’s something wrong with your system. One possible explanation is that you have a lack of carbon in your diet. While charring all your steaks to smithereens is one way to do it, it’s also a quick road to cancer. Luckily, there’s an easier, simpler way to get more carbon in your life: fruit. Fruit is a great source of carbon, so ensure you’re getting at least two to three servings per day.

12. Fizzy drinks

Carbonated drinks contain high levels of calcium, so if you’ve got a craving for fizzy drinks or sodas, then a deficiency could be the problem. Introduce healthier foods like sesame seeds, broccoli, kale, legumes and turnip greens into your diet to help resolve the issue.

13. Coffee

If you’re constantly getting a strong urge for an even stronger cup of coffee, your body could be crying out for certain important nutrients. One such nutrient is sulfur, which can be addressed by eating plenty of cruciferous vegetables, cranberries and asparagus. Coffee cravings can also suggest an iron deficiency, which means you need more beans, legumes, seaweed, spinach or good quality red meat in your life. Coffee cravings can even mean that you’re lacking in phosphorus, which can be addressed by eating plenty of pinto beans, pumpkin seeds, brazil nuts or lentils.

14. Tobacco

If you’re a smoker and you’ve got a craving for tobacco, obviously there’s a dependency on nicotine at play. But if you’ve never smoked a cigarette in your life and you find yourself gravitating towards a pack of Marlboros, you might be deficient in tyrosine. A healthy way to restock your tyrosine levels is by eating plenty of avocados and bananas, oats, legumes, beans, nuts and seeds.

15. Sweets

Got a burning desire for candy? Believe it or not, certain sweets can actually contain a range of important vitamins including tryptophan (an essential amino acid), chromium, sulfur and phosphorus. Replenish your tryptophan levels by eating spirulina or raw cacao. Up your chromium ante by bringing more onions or tomatoes into your life. Welcome back sulfur with more cruciferous vegetables. Hail a new era of phosphorus with pinto beans, pumpkin seeds and brazil nuts.

That being said, if you often get a strong sweet craving, you could just have low blood sugar (hypoglycemia). Rather than reaching for the candy, reach for fresh fruit, beans or legumes instead.

16. Alcohol

Alcohol is actually a type of drug, so it’s no great surprise that you find yourself reaching for the whiskey or gin again and again. But this craving can actually be your body’s way of crying out for more minerals, particularly potassium, protein or glutamine. You could even be lacking enough calcium in your diet. Potassium deficiency is solved by getting more citrus fruits and bananas in your diet, calcium by eating plenty of broccoli and kale, and glutamine by eating vegetables like cabbage or beetroot. Protein is an easy one — more meat, eggs and nuts!
