Health and Fitness Tip #96 - 4 Ways to Use Oranges in Your Beauty Routine

4 Ways To Use Oranges In Your Beauty Routine

Summer with summer among us, it means it’s a time in which fresh, vibrant citrus fruits are brought to the forefront of our diet. As the matriarch of the citrus family, oranges provide our mouths with a flavor explosion, our immune systems with a vitamin C boost and our homes with a splash of vivid color.

When it comes to uses beyond the taste buds, most people look at oranges and see just a vitamin C-rich food source and nothing more. But if you dig a little deeper, you’ll discover that that bowl of oranges on your kitchen counter or dining room table can actually provide a wide array of beauty benefits for your hair and skin. And the best part? It’s completely natural, unlike the toxic concoctions you’ve been buying from your local supermarket or drugstore. Read on to find out how you can use those oranges to take your beauty routine to the next level, the healthy way.

1. Orange peels for acne

Acne, otherwise known as pimples, zits, or “awww gross, what’s that?!” take up residence on your face or other areas of the body where your skin’s oil glands (sebaceous glands) are clogged by fine dirt or debris, or infected with bacteria. The skin responds with an inflammatory skin lesion filled with pus, designed to prevent spread of the infection or foreign substance (i.e. dirt), but with very little consideration to your looks.

Orange peels, provided they are from organic sources (non-organic oranges are thoroughly doused in pesticides and other chemicals which can harm your health and hinder your beauty routine) can help to cleanse your skin pores and prevent bacterial invasion, thereby removing the likelihood that skin will feel the need to start growing giant pustules on your face.

When you eat your organic orange, set the peel aside and allow it to dry for a day or so. Once it has dried a little, grind the peel and add some water to make a rudimentary paste. Rinse your skin then gently massage the paste onto your face and any other areas prone to acne, leaving it on for 20 to 30 minutes then washing it off with warm water. Doing this daily will help keep your skin nice and clean, feeling refreshed, and prevent the production of excess oils which can contribute to your pimple problem.

2. Orange peels for blackheads

Okay, they might seem like the same thing, but they’re not —blackheads are different than acne! Blackheads come into being when hair follicles become clogged with dead skin cells and oil, closing off the follicle opening and causing a bump, called a comedone, to develop. These annoying little black bumps typically develop on the nose, cheeks and forehead.

One of the best ways to get rid of blackheads the natural way is to make a facial mask from orange peels. As with the acne paste, grind a dried orange peel then mix it together with equal parts plain yogurt. Rub the mask into your skin with gentle circular motions, leaving it on for 15 to 20 minutes then rinsing it off with warm water. The facial mask provides a natural, pain-free method of removing blackheads while keeping your skin fresh and smelling like delicious citrus.

3. Oranges for wrinkles

It seems an inevitable part of getting older, but it doesn’t mean developing wrinkles gets any easier as the years go by. Chances are, you’ve invested in an anti-aging cream at some point in your life, and you’ve probably been highly disappointed by their lack of effectiveness. Plus, they’re loaded with harmful compounds and chemicals, and likely end up making your skin age even faster than it would have in the first place.

Oranges contain high levels of antioxidants, the most potent of which is vitamin C. These antioxidants directly fight the process of aging by preventing the oxidative damage caused by free radicals. Simply by consuming oranges you’re providing your body with the tools it needs to minimize the damage caused by free radicals, thereby allowing more of your skin cells to remain young and vibrant and prevent excessive die-off. Vitamin C contributes to the production of collagen, which helps keep your skin supple and wrinkle-free.

4. Oranges for hair

The impressive collection of vitamins and nutrients found in oranges, including vitamins B, B12, C and E, helps to nourish your hair, keep it looking revitalized and strengthen dull or damaged hair. When combined with honey, lemon, and olive oil, all nutritional powerhouses in their own right, oranges can provide the natural treatment you’ve been looking for all these years.

In a bowl, mix together the juice from a whole squeezed orange and a whole squeezed lemon, one tablespoon of raw honey, and one tablespoon of olive oil. Rinse your hair with warm water, pat dry so it remains damp, then gently massage the mixture into your hair, paying particular attention to your scalp. Leave on for around one hour before rinsing off in the shower with warm water.

Do you fit in? Do you feel like you just don't belong? Have you felt like that your whole life?

Do you fit in? Do you feel like you just don't belong? Have you felt like that your whole life?

All my life I have felt that I never really fit in. I felt I could never really be me or show my true quirky self.

.
I have always hid my celiac's disease from people so they didn't know and didn't judge me for having it and being "weird" when it came to eating.
.
Even in high school and being a cheerleader, I never felt like I fit in. I wasn't the skinny girl, I wasn't the popular one, etc. And then in college I joined a sorority and become more open, but I still never felt that I fit in. I had Celiacs, I was weird, I was shy, I had quirks. All my life those 4 things have hindered me from being me.

.
But when I met Rich, I could be me. He was weird, he was quirky, and he loved me for me, my weirdness, my quirks, and my celiacs. However, he was the only one I could be me around! I still didn't fit in! Even as a teacher and in a school working full time.
.
However, with Beachbody I am me! I fit in and I am accepted for who I am. No one judges me because I have celiacs or that I am weird or that I have quirks, or that I am an introvert and need time outs from large social settings some times. These ladies have accepted ME for who I AM!
.
Up till 3 years ago, I never felt like I truly belonged. I had accepted that and moved on from it. I had Rich and I was okay with that.
.
But after this weekend at the Diamond Retreat, I know that is no longer the case! The past three years, I have met some amazing women and have made some of the best friends that I never would have made if it wasn't for Beachbody.
.
I have met people that have touched my life in so many ways that they don't know.  I have rekindled friendships that faded after high school and college.
.
God has shown me that I am truly where I need to be, where I can be me and grow to be a stronger leader and woman because of the men and women he has placed in my life with Beachbody!!
.
Today I am blessed beyond words with not only Beachbody, but also because of my mentor for providing us a weekend away with other leaders in our downline to not just relax, but to grow together.
.
These ladies have accepted all my weird quirks this weekend from eating my own food, to eating a pepper like an apple, to drinking my shakeo with a spoon, and licking the lid and entire shaker cup clean! 🙈
.
No one once judged me for being me! My introverted self spent an entire weekend away, with these ladies, where I laughed, cried, learned with and from them!
.
Thank you so much Nikki for holding this retreat! And thank you ladies for coming and allowing me to learn and grow with you all this weekend! Each and everyone of you have a special place in my heart after this weekend!!

Health and Fitness Tip #95 - Coconut Oil 411

Facts You May Not Know About Coconut Oil

Coconut oil. You know, that clear stuff that smells like coconuts. Coconut oil turns hard when it cools below room temperature, and has a certain inherent sweetness that goes nicely in baking. You might have a jar of it in your cupboard, gathering dust. You may bust it out occasionally to do some Asian-style cooking, or when you want to bake a few healthy muffins.

Well, it’s time to dust off that jar and start making it a very big part of your life, because there’s a whole world of health benefits that coconut oil can provide, and chances are you haven’t heard of many (or any!) of them. Here are four wonderful things you’ll probably appreciate learning about that dusty jar of coconut oil in your cupboard.

1. Use it as a moisturizer

Coconut oil can literally replace every single moisturizer, exfoliator, and toner you have. It’s a one-stop skincare shop due to the fact that it possesses the very useful ability to penetrate deep into the layers of the skin. It absorbs into the skin quickly and efficiently, leaving very little oily residue, hydrating dry or cracked areas, and encouraging the skin to produce collagen, which helps to keep skin elastic and wrinkle-free.

What’s more, it smells freakin’ amazing, and it doesn’t matter if you end up with some left on your hands — just put it in your mouth! Coconut oil is really good for you internally as well, so your digestive system will be just as thankful as your epidermis.

2. Use it as a carrier oil

If you’re serious about your health, you’ve probably invested in at least a few bottles of essential oil. Whether it’s the super-versatile lavender essential oil or the headache-curing peppermint essential oil, there’s an oil for just about every occasion.

The thing is, though, your skin isn’t always able to tolerate these super-concentrated plant oils. Certain oils may irritate your skin if applied directly without a carrier oil. Coconut oil can dilute the essential oil to ensure your skin doesn’t get irritated. The skin-penetrating powers of coconut oil also ensure the essential oil works its magic.

3. Use it to style and care for your hair

It’s a sad fact that most conventional hairstyling and care products are absolutely loaded with toxic chemicals and unpronounceable ingredients that are bad news for your health. Many of these common ingredients have in fact been linked to serious diseases and health conditions, so it’s time to put down your jar of wax or can of hairspray and seek out something a little more nurturing for your hair and health.

Once again, all you need for your hair is coconut oil. It works great in the summer, but even better in the winter. Also you can use coconut oil to add some body to your hair and keep it hydrated and protected from the sun.

4. Use it as a massage oil

Why not finish things off with something a little more racy? If you’re planning on spicing things up a little in the bedroom and massaging your partner into a state of heightened arousal (or relaxation, depending on your goals), coconut oil makes an excellent massage oil. Unlike many oils, it is solid below room temperature, meaning it’s not overly messy. However, it can be easily warmed up between your hands or once you start massaging it into your partner. The bonus is it smells amazing, conjuring up the alluring fragrance of the Caribbean, and it doesn’t contain the nasty fake perfumes many other massage oils have.

#Transformation Tuesday

#TransformationTuesday

It's Tuesday and I am bringing you a different transformation.
.
I don't want to talk to you about the weight we lost or the inches that melted away.
.
Tonight I want to talk to you about how working out has transformed our relationship.
.
Left picture is of me and Rich when we first met, PRE-BEACHBODY, We were passionate about working out, but not together. I loved cardio, he loved weights. I was a morning person, he was an evening person.
.
We shared a hobby but that was it.
.
Now the picture on the right is of Rich and I this past month. This is DURING BEACHBODY.
.
We are both more passionate about working out. We love to workout TOGETHER. We enjoy the combination of both cardio and lifting. Rich has become a morning person!
.
Beachbody has done so much for our lives! The one thing that I didn't realize that it would do, was bring Rich and I even CLOSER together.
.
Let's face it, marriage is HARD! Relationships, dating, it's HARD! And no marriage is perfect! Ours isn't. And when it comes to luck, there isn't such in a marriage.
.
Marriage is work! It's communication, it's spending time together, it's accepting the other person for who they are, it's fighting, it's loving, it's honesty, and it's trust!
.
Working out isn't the key to a happy marriage, but it helps! Working out together for the past 6 months has made us stronger! It's time we have been able to spend together! It's time that we have been able to push each other harder. It's been time were we have been able to communicate!
.
This is the best transformation I could ask for! I love how working out hasn't just made us healthier but has brought us even closer together in a way we thought already had!

Its Official! The Yahners have moved again!!

IT OFFICIAL!!!

We have moved! Well for the next 4 months at least! 😂😂
.
Rich and I found an apartment to sublease til the end of 2016!!
.
We are super excited to be back together and living under the same roof for more than 2 days! EVEN if it's furniture-less! 😜
And the NEWS just keeps coming!!
.
Because of Beachbody I have been able to work from home and build an amazing business and team.
.
However, not having kids yet, it makes it lonely, so I am continuing with my LOVE and passion of helping others and working at one of my FAVORITE chiropractor's office in State College Monday - Thursday! This gets me out of the house, socializing with others and continuing within the health and wellness area that I have TRULY come to love!
.
Total Body WELLNESS is my TRUE passion! It's not just about fitness and clean eating, it's about taking care of your entire body, both mentally and physically!
.
I am excited to be back in the State College Area, working with the Simpsons, and of course, being back with my hubby! 💜💜
.
It's crazy to think 4 years ago I was miserable teaching, and now I have the choice to work from home or any where that I want and that is a part of my true passion!
.
Some days may be rough, but I know that I am truly blessed to be on the journey that I am on.

Health and Fitness Tip #94 -

19 Foods That Make You Happy

Food for thought: Since gut-health is linked to the brain, there’s a good chance that what you’re feeding yourself is also feeding your mood. Just as some foods can make you feel lousy after eating, others can make you feel great, thanks to mood-boosting nutrients.

1. Brazil nuts

Your thyroid plays a key role in your mood, according to the Thyroid Foundation. That’s where Brazil nuts come in. Brazil nuts are the richest source of the mineral selenium. Selenium-rich foods help alleviate depression. And studies have shown that eating a small handful of Brazil nuts every day can help to improve mood.

2. Avocados

Folate-rich avocados will keep you smiling. Foods that contain high levels of folate can help stop the buildup of homocysteine, a substance that can impair circulation and delivery of nutrients to the brain, suggests Medical News Today.

3. Walnuts

Walnuts are not only good for your heart, but they improve your mood, says Dr. Axe. Walnuts are the true brain food and contain one of the highest amounts of omega-3 fats of any nut. Including walnuts in your diet is said to improve anxiety, according to a study published in the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease.

4. Asparagus

If you’re feeling a little blue, give asparagus a try. Asparagus has mood-boosting nutrients like folic acid, which helps other mood-boosting nutrients such as vitamin D work well in your body, suggests The American College of Healthcare Sciences (ACHS).

5. Dark, leafy greens

Eating dark leafy greens like spinach, kale and Swiss chard fight inflammation. And according to a study published in Jama Psychiatry, severe depression has been linked to inflammation. Nutrient-dense leafy greens contain an abundance of vitamins A, C, E and K, minerals and phytochemicals, all great for fighting inflammation.

6. Watermelon

Watermelon is a great source of lycopene. Lycopene not only protects your brain, but helps to fight depression-causing inflammation. Olive oil has been shown to increase lycopene absorption, so why not try a watermelon salad this summer.

7. Salmon

Loaded with omega-3 fatty acids, salmon is also rich in tryptophan, an amino acid that is converted in the brain into serotonin. Tryptophan depletion actually affects serotonergic transmission, which may bring on the blues, suggests research from the National Institute for Mental Health’s Mood and Anxiety Disorders Program, Bethesda, MD.

8. Hummus

Hummus, normally made with chickpeas, is loaded with mood-elevating nutrients tryptophan, folate and vitamin B6. Make your own by combining chickpeas, garlic, olive oil, lemon juice and tahini.

9. Milk

Warm milk, often suggested as a remedy for sleep, contains the amino acid tryptophan, a precursor to the sleep-inducing compounds serotonin and melatonin, says Dairy Nutrition. Combined with folate and B12, milk will not only help you relax but also make you smile.

10. Broccoli

To make the “feel good” chemical serotonin, the body needs folate and B vitamins, according to research published in the Journal of Psychiatry and Neuroscience. Half a cup of broccoli has 52 mg of folate, in addition to a rich source of B1, B2 and B6.

11. Eggs

Eggs are loaded with mood-lifting omega-3 fatty acids, zinc, choline and B vitamins. Since they’re a great source of protein, you’ll feel fuller longer and more energized.

12. Dark chocolate

Chocolate lovers are well aware of the mood-enhancing qualities of chocolate. Chocolate with at least 70 percent cocoa gives you an instant lift by improving blood flow to the brain and relaxing blood vessels. Dark chocolate particularly alleviates anxiety and depressive symptoms, according to the Centre for Clinical and Quality of Life Studies.

13. Green tea

Green tea contains theanine, an amino acid that helps control stress, mood and muscle relaxation. But if drinking late in the day, opt for decaf, so the caffeine doesn’t impair your sleep.

14. Pumpkin seeds

Pumpkin seeds are packed with tryptophan, which metabolizes in the brain, into  mood-boosting serotonin.

15. Coconut oil

A study conducted in Malaysia looked at how consuming high-antioxidant virgin coconut oil could affect mental health. Published in the journal Experimental and Therapeutic Medicine the study evaluated the anti-stress and antioxidant effects of virgin coconut oil in stressed-out mice. The study found that high-quality virgin coconut oil may actually help with depression and even eliminate the need for antidepressant drugs.

16. Bananas

Eating bananas can help relieve depression and improve your mood thanks once again to tryptophan, the same compound in turkey meat that promotes calm and relaxation. Combined with B vitamins, the conversion of tryptophan into serotonin helps improve mood and overall feelings of well-being.

17. Chia seeds

Chia seeds contain tryptophan and phenylalanine, B6 and healthy fats. Chia seeds are especially high in omega-3 fatty acids, which help keep us upbeat and happy.

18. Watermelon

Watermelon enhances mood thanks to vitamin B6. Research suggests that those who suffer from anxiety and depression are generally deficient in this vitamin. B6 acts as a neurotransmitter by producing serotonin in the body, which leads to the feel-good sensations.

19. Greek yogurt

Greek yogurt, loaded with probiotics is now thought to reduce activity in areas of the brain associated with emotion and pain. According to UCLA researchers, probiotics like those found in Greek yogurt affect brain function in humans. In an early proof-of-concept study funded by Danone, researchers found that women who regularly consumed probiotics through yogurt showed positive altered brain function during rest and emotion. Opa!

Life....Its hard sometimes and doesn't always go the way we plan it to.

LIFE....IT DOESN'T always go as planned.

We grow up thinking that life is going to be easy and that everything will just fall into place just like it did when we were kids.
.
AND THEN....
.
We grow up!
.
Life doesn't happen like it does in the movies. There are no fairy tale endings. Life is hard. It throws curve balls at you, it brings you down, and sometimes makes you question yourself and the choices you make.
.
Adulting can STINK!
.
This summer a lot of things happened, things that I haven't shared, things that I kept in, and I thought I could just forget or move on and act like they didn't happen.
.
BUT they did and acting like they didn't happen, has put me to a FUNK. I have been down lately, I have really been EFFECTIVE by the things that I was trying to forget. Because I mean, who wants negativity in their life. I know I don't! I try to bring the sunshine with me everywhere I go.

BUT.....lately it's been hard. Lately I have been in the dark, struggling to find that sunshine to share.
.
So why am I telling you all this, because I want you to know that it's okay, to NOT be perfect, it's okay to have a rough patch in life, and it's okay to be in the dark.
.
BUT not for too long, because the longer you are in the dark, the harder it is to crawl out of it.
.
How did I do it? Well honestly I am not there yet, I am working every day, to get out of this funk, to accept the past, and to move on from it. But what I have found that is working, is my daily devotionals, my workouts, and my personal development. I am focusing on books that are helping me accept the things I can not change, move on, and to continue to find my extraordinary with coaching, marriage, and friendship.
.
It's not easy! It's easier to stay in the funk, but I am tired of being blah, I am tried of holding back, and I want my SUNSHINE back!
.
Life can be hard. I know it, but remember you have someone that cares and loves you. And if you have to find a stranger to connect with and share your struggles. Not one of us is perfect, not one of us has the fairy tale life!
.
We all struggle. But we find our sunshine again! And we learn and grow from our past which makes us a stronger and a better person in the end!

Health and Fitness Tip #93 - 13 Reasons To Drink More Green Tea

13 Reasons To Drink More Green Tea

Green tea has been enjoyed in Asian cultures since ancient times. Today, it’s a popular drink all over the world, and for very good reason. You probably already know that green tea is healthy.

1. It is a natural source of energy

Green tea contains caffeine, perfect for that morning “wake-up” or an afternoon pick-me-up. However, it’s not too strong or jarring. That’s because an amino acid present in the tea evens out the caffeine. So, if you’re sensitive to coffee, you might find green tea is the perfect energy beverage.

2. It helps combat chronic inflammation

Green tea is chock-full of antioxidants, including catechins and flavonoid antioxidants. These compounds are crucial for fighting free radicals in the body, and work to reduce inflammation throughout the body’s systems.

As chronic inflammation is linked to a number of diseases, keeping yours down is crucial to your overall health.

3. It may lower your risk of developing diabetes

A 2013 study published in the Diabetes & Metabolism Journal linked green tea to reducing blood glucose levels and improving insulin sensitivity. The study, which was performed in Japan, found that participants who drank the most green tea had a 42 percent lower risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

4. It supports the health of your heart

Not only do the catechins and flavonoid antioxidants found in green tea help to reduce chronic inflammation, they can also improve cardiovascular health by preventing the aggregation of platelets in the arteries. It may also help to lower blood pressure, another important factor in heart health.

5. It may help improve your memory

Green tea may have a significantly positive effect on cognition, and in particular, on working memory. A 2014 study performed at the University of Basel in Switzerland found that green tea extract helped to improve working memory. Researchers hypothesize that green tea might help to improve symptoms of dementia with future research.

6. It may help you lose weight

Research performed at Pennsylvania State University in 2014 found that a combination of green tea and exercise could boost weight loss efforts. Mice that were given green tea extract and exercised regularly reduced their average body mass by nearly 30 percent, and their abdominal mass by about 37 percent.

7. It may fight certain cancers

Research has found that green tea may help combat certain forms of cancer. A 2012 study presented at a conference for the American Association for Cancer Research found that green tea may inhibit the growth of prostate cancer tumors.

Also, a 2006 analysis published in the journal Carcinogenesis found that women who drank the highest amounts of green tea had a 22 percent lower risk of developing breast cancer, compared to women who drank the lowest amounts.

8. It helps fight the signs of aging

A lot of aging signs, such as wrinkles and age spots, have to do with free radical damage accumulating over time. Since the catechins and other polyphenols found in green tea help fight free radicals, drinking it can help you to look younger, especially if you drink it on a regular basis.

9. It may help protect your joints

Thanks to its anti-inflammatory properties, drinking green tea may help to keep your joints functioning optimally. Drinking it on a regular basis may help to prevent conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis.

10. It may protect the body from toxicity

A 2015 study performed by Pennsylvania State University researchers found that drinking green tea protected against liver toxicity induced by taking green tea extract supplements. Green tea extract is a popular way to get the benefits of green tea, but the high dosage in supplements may be hard on your liver. Researchers found that drinking green tea in the weeks before taking a supplement helped to reduce the risk of liver toxicity. Better to drink the real tea itself!

11. It’s great for detoxification

Because of all the antioxidants that green tea contains, and all of the health benefits mentioned above, green tea is a perfect addition to a detox regimen. You can drink it hot or iced, or use it as the base for a fruit and veggie smoothie.

12. It can help you to feel less bloated

Caffeine is a diuretic, which means it can help relieve water weight and bloating. This makes a cup of green tea perfect after a big meal. It may also help women to feel less bloated during PMS and during the menstrual cycle.

13. It can help ease your mind
Green tea contains an amino acid known as L-theanine, which helps to encourage the production of alpha waves in the brain. This can lead to improved mood, and a state of relaxation.

So, there you have it! If you’re in the market for a great green tea, remember to go organic to avoid any exposure to nasty pesticides, and purchase from a source you trust. Steep the tea in boiled water for just two or three minutes. If you steep it for too long, it may become bitter. This tea is wonderful hot or iced.

If you’d like a little sweetness, add a bit of raw honey once the tea has cooled a little — you’ll be getting even more health benefits, along with a delicious flavor!
