Health and Fitness Tip #99 - Anxiety and Food

Anxiety and food — what’s the connection?

Anxiety disorders are complex and although various factors play a role, chemical imbalances within the brain cannot be ignored. It’s been found within a number of studies that a diet high in sugar and processed foods actually damages the brain, worsening symptoms of both depression and anxiety.

While focusing on mood, the neurotransmitter serotonin influences symptoms of poor mood and restlessness, as well as dopamine and GABA. Of course, serotonin imbalances are prominent in the brain, however, 95 percent of your body’s serotonin is produced within your gut. Meaning, poor nutrition not only affects digestion, but also mental health.

Unlike nutrient-rich whole foods, which offer a range of vitamins, minerals, fiber and probiotics, the following foods may actually contribute to feelings of anxiety.

1. Sugar
It’s no secret that the standard Western diet is packed with sugar — in fact, it’s estimated that Americans eat an average of 22 teaspoons per day. Too much glucose in the blood is actually toxic and is a driving force behind a range of health conditions, including diabetes, fatty liver disease, cancer and yep — poor mental health.

Within one study, published in Life Sciences, a diet high in sugar was shown to increase symptoms of anxiety. Others have shown that a high-sugar diet directly influences dopamine, decreasing the activity of D2 receptors. With the being said, the large majority of research has focused on sugar withdrawal and its effect on anxiety-like behavior.

When rats were withdrawing from a liquid high-sugar diet, for instance, increased anxiety levels followed when placed in a maze. Within the amygdala of their brains, CRH also increased — a hormone and neurotransmitter that is related to stress responses. This has led to not only further anxiety research, but has provided key clues regarding food addiction as well.

2. Hydrogenated oils and fried foods

Fried, fatty foods and trans fats have been linked to a range of health issues, including rising cases of heart disease and colon cancer. Not only are foods fried in hydrogenated oil, but these trans fats are also found in baked goods, margarine and many other processed foods. Researchers suggest that a diet high in hydrogenated oils may lead to neuromotor and neuropsychiatric diseases.

Within one study, published in the International Journal of Food Sciences and Nutrition, it was found that rats who were fed trans fats for a prolonged period of time exhibited increased feelings of fear and anxiety. In comparison to rats fed a standard diet, those who consumed hydrogenated vegetable fat displayed a reduction in exploratory and locomotor activities.

3. Caffeinated drinks

Although you may first consider coffee, which actually offers a range of key health benefits, caffeine is a stimulant and when consumed in high enough doses, you may increase stress-related symptoms of anxiety. In terms of their overall effect on your health, beverages such as soda and energy drinks are highly damaging.

Not only do they expose you to high levels of sugar, but when consuming too much caffeine, you can increase cortisol levels while influencing neurotransmitter balance. Within one study, published in Depression and Anxiety, energy drink consumption was significantly correlated with increased anxiety in young male adults.

4. Deli meats

A clear connection has been made between deli meats, hot dogs and worsening health. The majority of research has focused on cancer, since processed meat is considered to be a potent multiorgan carcinogen. Packed with sodium, preservatives and nitrates, these questionable meats have been linked to an increased risk of depression and anxiety — they may also trigger headaches in some individuals.

5. Fat-free options

Companies have marketed their products as “fat-free” so that consumers believe that they’re making healthier choices. Just like carbs, fat has falsely gotten a bad rep. Remember, it’s the type of fat that you need to be concerned about. Although society has become obsessed with a low-fat diet, rates of obesity, diabetes and mental health issues continue to soar.

Considering approximately 60 percent of your brain is made up of fat, you need to consume healthy sources within your diet, including the omega-3 fatty acids known as EPA and DHA. A lack of beneficial fats has been shown to cause mood impairment, while an increase in unhealthy fats leads to inflammation of the brain. The next time you pick up a fat-free option, look at the ingredients and in particular, focus on its sugar content.

6. Artificial sweeteners

Although sugar has been linked to a variety of diseases time and time again, foods that contain artificial sweeteners are just as damaging — if not worse. Containing phenylalanine, a known neurotoxin, artificial sweeteners have been shown to deplete serotonin levels, triggering symptoms of anxiety, mood swings, paranoia and panic attacks.

Diet soda is a classic example, as consumers often think it’s a healthier choice because these options contain zero sugar, fat or calories. Studies have shown that an increased consumption of diet soda, which contains aspartame, leads to issues with emotional ability, particularly mood swings and anxiety.

7. Alcohol

There’s nothing wrong with a glass of red wine with dinner every once in awhile, in fact, it’s been shown to support positive heart health due to its resveratrol content. With that being said, regular drinkers often experience lower levels of serotonin, leading to symptoms of anxiety.

In order to alleviate their symptoms, they often drink more, leading to a rather vicious cycle. Although alcohol influences key neurotransmitters, the withdrawal of alcohol can be more problematic. Alcohol-induced anxiety can last for hours after drinking, increasing one’s risk of dependence.

At the end of the day, the worst possible thing you can do about your symptoms of anxiety would be to do nothing at all. By eliminating the foods above, you will instantly boost your health, both physical and mental. In addition to a more nutritious diet, focus on beneficial herbs, try yoga, meditation or Reiki, keep a journal, exercise and get enough sleep. You no longer have to live with anxiety. Take action — starting with your grocery list.

Nothing worth having comes easy!

Nothing worth having comes easy!

I don't know about you but there are days I wish this saying wasn't true!
.
I wish I could be Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz and just click my heals 3 times and have what I want!!
.
BUT.....what fun is that?!? What fun would it be if you didn't work for it? If you didn't challenge yourself? If you didn't go through the ups and downs we call life?
.
First off, Life would be boring and and second, we wouldn't be who we are! Ups and downs, going after what we want, challenging ourselves, it's what makes us who we are!
.
Yes, when we set a goal or start something new it can be scary and there will be times we fall down. But don't let those falls stop you from going after what you want. Don't let those downs make you step away. Instead forge ahead and keep going!
.
Remember Rome wasn't build in a day and neither will your goals or the body you want happen in a day!
.
It's a process, it takes time.
.
Don't stop! Believe you can and you will!!

Health and Fitness Tip #98 - 7 Foods Rich in Calcium

7 Foods Rich in Calcium

The typical adult needs around 1,000 milligrams per day of calcium to meet health recommendations. But when this amounts to three daily glasses of milk, things get a little bit complicated.
For starters, many people are allergic to milk and other dairy-based products. Dairy, as one of the most common food allergens, can make life seriously miserable for those who are lactose intolerant, whether they know it or not. Next, dairy that comes from cows that have been cooped up in factories all their lives and fed grains is highly inflammatory and has a poor omega-3 to omega-6 fatty acid ratio. Finally, many people choose not to drink milk or eat dairy products for ethical reasons.

And besides, three glasses of milk a day? That’s a lot of milk!

Luckily, natural alternative sources of calcium aren’t so hard to come by. Many people are surprised to learn that there are plenty of vegetables, fruits and meats out there that can pack a serious calcium punch. You just need to know where to look. Here’s seven such foods which will help you make up for those three glasses of milk, and then some.

1. Sardines

Let’s kick things off with a food which isn’t everybody’s cup of tea, but one which people should probably be eating anyway on account of it’s vast nutritional capacity. Sardines are a small, salty, cold-water fish which, at 486 milligrams per can, are a force to be reckoned with in the calcium department.

They’re also an excellent source of vitamin B-12, a key nutrient for mental and nervous system health. Sardines also contain a healthy portion of vitamin D, a nutrient that is particularly hard to find in foods and which is essential for strong, healthy bones and immune function.

If you’re not too keen to chomp down on a sardine all by itself (it turns out you wouldn’t be the only one!), there’s plenty of other ways to enjoy them. Try mixing them into a hearty stew, with plenty of tomato and cayenne pepper, or chop into small pieces and sprinkle over salads for a salty, protein-rich addition.

2. Pink salmon

Salmon is a more universally-palatable alternative to Sardines, which is almost as potent in calcium. You can find 279 milligrams of calcium in a small can of pink salmon, which incidentally is the easiest and surest way to get hold of wild caught salmon. Wild caught salmon is many times better for your health than farmed salmon, on account of its high omega-3 to omega-6 ratio and it’s more impressive array of nutrients.

For the ultimate health trifecta, try to find a can of sustainably harvested, wild-caught salmon that has a BPA free lining.

3. Almonds

You’ll be happy to know that almonds aren’t just an excellent source of protein, vitamin E and potassium…they’re also one of the most concentrated sources of calcium! Just one ounce of almonds (approximately a handful) will give you 75 milligrams of calcium, which together with other calcium-rich foods goes a long way towards meeting your 1000 milligram daily quota. Just don’t go too crazy on them – one handful should be the upper limit of your daily almond intake.

4. Collard greens

It turns out that when your grandma told you to eat your greens, she wasn’t just doing it to torture you. Yep, those collard greens which you so despised as a child are one of nature’s richest sources of calcium, boasting an impressive 268 milligrams per cup of cooked greens.

Collard greens are also rich in vitamin A, one of the harder to come by nutrients in the foods we eat – so don’t think you’re off the hook if you think you’ve already got enough calcium for the day! But you don’t need to view eating them as a chore – they’re absolutely delicious when sautĆ©ed in butter or olive oil.

5. Kale

While it’s not as impressive as it’s collard cousin, kale still makes it to the heavyweights on account of it’s calcium content. At around 100 milligrams per cup of raw kale, this dark leafy vegetable is a worthwhile contributor to your daily kale intake. Plus, these days, it’s cool to eat, so you’ll definitely be helping your nouveau-hippie vibe.

6. Edamame

Next time you pop down to your local sushi restaurant for a round of all-you-can-eat, you can rest easy knowing that those edamame beans are doing your calcium requirements proud. Just one cup of cooked edamame (immature soybeans in the pod) will provide around 98 milligrams of calcium. They’re also high in protein and fiber, so all that overeating wasn’t for nothing.

 7. Figs

Have you ever bought a whole fig before? They’re slightly alarming, with their vivid brain-esque interior and strange bulbous shape. But aside from their aesthetics, you should definitely add figs to your list of calcium-rich foods. Half a cup of dried figs will give you an impressive 121 milligrams of calcium, along with plenty of magnesium and a whole lot of sweetness. Bon appetit!

Calcium should always be taken with vitamin D, as it helps your body absorb it more efficiently. So either get stuck into those sardines or salmon, which have plenty of vitamin D as well as calcium, or make sure you get some sun when you eat your calcium-rich veggies!

Goals Determine Your Priorities!

Your goals determine your priorities---and your priorities determine whether you'll reach your goals.

No one fulfills his/her purpose, develops his/her potential, or consistently helps others without goals.
.
Goals keep our attention on the present. To be successful, you must live and work in the present because that is where you have the power to actually accomplish something.

The goals you set show the path in which to take. They guide you and keep you on track. They keep you moving forward.
.
Your goals give you direction, so if you don't set goals for yourself then you will end up wondering around aimlessly!!
.
Don't be afraid to set goals big and small. They are your friend, not your enemy!! So make lots of them!!
.
Set a BIG, Hairy, Scary one! I have one! And I have a month to hit it! Am I scared? Sure! But more than anything I am determined!!
.
Today I want you to set 1 big hairy scary goal and 1 small not so scary goal that will help guide you on the path to your destination and go after it!

3 Years Difference all summed up in a license picture

My Past 3 years in one Picture!

This is what my Friday Morning consisted of this past week!

I totally forgot this was the year my license was to be renewed! I hate getting my picture taken so maybe that is why I forgo Haha!

So needless to say on my birthday, I found the paper I needed to turn in. šŸ™ˆ

I went Friday morning and got my license renewed and my picture taken again!

Now to remember to get it done again when it needs it! 😜

However, looking at just what 3 years time can do! It's crazy!

The oct. 2013 pic is at the VERY beginning of my Beachbody journey and the journey I took on to get fit and healthy for my wedding.

The 2016 is 3 years in to an amazing life style change and the best career path I could have stumbled upon! Coaching has changed my life in so many ways. But the biggest one is the discipline that I have learned from it and have been able to maintain over 3 years time.

Now my journey is about helping others and continuing to stay on a healthy path so when we start a family we pass it on to our kids.

Do you look at your license and compare the past to the present? As much as I hate getting my picture done I love how it makes me reflect on the past 3/4 years.  I really do love looking back at the past and seeing how things have changed and how far I have come.

Health and Fitness Tip #97 - 5 Ways Pineapple Can Nourish Your Skin

5 Ways Pineapple Can Nourish Your Skin

When you think of pineapples what do you think of? I know for me, I DON”T think about how it can help my skin.

However, did you know that pineapples have awesome health benefits?!? This is particularly the case when it comes to skincare, where either topical application or drinking it as a delicious smoothie or fruit juice can nourish your depleted epidermis and keep you looking young.

1.       Keep your skin looking younger

Nobody wants old, saggy, unsightly skin, but you also don’t want to be forever applying toxic mass-produced moisturizers which expose your skin and body to nasty chemicals and synthetic compounds. Pineapple provides a convenient solution, fighting the oxidative damage of your skin from free radicals with the aid of antioxidants and alpha-hydroxy acids.

Seeing as your face is the most prominent part of your skin, and the part of your body that (normal) people typically look at first, you might want to try the following face and skin mask recipe:

Pineapple and Papaya Face and Skin Mask Recipe
Ingredients
1/2 pineapple
1/2 papaya
1 tbsp raw honey
 Coconut oil (or avocado oil)
Equipment - Blender

Instructions
Combine papaya, pineapple and raw honey in a blender until smooth.
Massage the mix onto your freshly rinsed face, neck or any area of your skin needing attention.
Get horizontal and leave the blend on for at least 15 minutes. There may be a tingling sensation from the bromelain (a unique enzyme which dissolves or “eats” a wide range of proteins, including dead skin) in the pineapple and the enzymes in the honey — that means it’s working!
Rinse the mixture off with warm water and apply a natural moisturizer, such as coconut or avocado oil, to the area to lock in all the goodness you’ve just soaked in.

2. Say goodbye to wrinkles and warts

Even worse than old-looking skin is wrinkled or warty skin. But how do you fight off something so inevitable? Well, you can start with pineapple: Applying the juice or the pulp of a fresh pineapple to your face or any area showing signs of wart infestation can utilize the healing powers of vitamin C to banish them from where they came. Meanwhile, the high concentrations of bromelain contained in pineapples can promote smoother skin and fewer wrinkles.

3. Help fight off acne

Acne is a serious problem for many people, particularly teenagers when hormones are running wild. Once again, the high levels of vitamin C contained in pineapple comes to the rescue, allowing the body to heal the symptoms causing your acne problem. In addition, pineapples contain plenty of anti-inflammatory compounds which help to prevent new breakouts and reduce the severity of existing ones.

4. Get sexy, flexy skin

Pineapple is just an all-around good guy when it comes to nourishing your skin and improving it without any adverse side effects. For starters, it helps the body to produce collagen that promotes increased skin elasticity and firmness. Secondly, its high levels of vitamin C promote repair at both the cellular and muscular levels, meaning your skin is more likely to regenerate and less likely to show signs of aging.

You can enjoy these beneficial effects on your skin in two ways: Either by drinking fresh, organic pineapple juice (without any nasty additives or added sugar — it’s sweet enough!) every day, or by rubbing the pulp directly on your face and other areas of your body. If you use the second method, just be sure to rinse it off afterward to ensure the bromelain doesn’t start eroding your skin (don’t worry too much — it would have to be on for a long time to do this).

5. Exfoliate your skin or scrub your feet

Pineapples make for the ideal exfoliator, on account of their high content of bromelain, which helps to remove dead skin and expose your newer, fresh-looking skin underneath. The best and simplest way to use pineapple as an exfoliator is to cut off a thick slice of pineapple and take it into the shower with you (making sure nobody’s watching — it might look a little weird). Then, rub the slice of pineapple firmly over all the areas of your skin you want treated, making sure to rinse thoroughly afterward.

The same approach can be applied to your feet, using either a slice of pineapple or a homemade foot scrub to soften skin, remove dead or excess skin, and help to remove any cracks on the soles of your feet.

So, next time you ask your bartender for a piƱa colada, consider requesting a chunk of straight pineapple on the side. Your skin will thank you for it.

As always, moderation is key. The ingredients in pineapple are extremely beneficial when used sparingly and infrequently, however, they can become troublesome if used in excess. Try to avoid using pineapple on your skin for more than 15 to 20 minutes at a time, and take a break in your pineapple routine every now and then.
