Health and Fitness Tip #84 - 3 things NOT to buy in BULK

3 Things NOT to Buy in BULK

1. Brown Rice.  But it's rice!  Yes, I know, you would think it lasts forever.  But because of it's higher oil content, 6 months is about all you're going to get out of brown rice before those oils turn rancid.  And even then, you should refrigerate it after opening.  That said, if all the food you bought is taking up all of your refrigerator space, just buy less brown rice at a time.

2. Nuts.  For the same high oil content reason, nuts are in the same boat as brown rice, but even worse.  I honestly wouldn't keep nuts around for more than a month, 2 months if refrigerated.  And yes, as odd as it seems, nuts should be refrigerated after opening, just like you would with peanut butter, almond butter, or any other nut butter.

3. Olive oil.  Rancidity galore!  In fact, a University of California study discovered that up to 69% of grocery store olive oil is fake!  Not even olive oil!  It's a travesty.  And even when it is genuine olive oil, most of it is rancid before it even makes it to your local supermarket.  But there's a twist to the story - Costco brand, Kirkland Organic, was one of the few brands to test out as real, pure olive oil.  Just don't buy more than you'll use in a 2 month period and be sure to store it in a dark, cool place.
