Foods that help with your metabolism and give you energy

2 MORE foods that set your Metabolism on Fire and Boost your Energy All Day!

1.    Water: A recent study showed that drinking COLD water frequently throughout your day (at least 6 – 8 glasses) actually increases your average metabolic rate by nearly 25%.  Another study also showed that dehydration leads to over-eating, because thirst is often misinterpreted as hunger cravings. Hungry when you shouldn’t be? Try drinking a glass of water!  Chances are that you were actually thirsty, not hungry. Staying hydrated also increases your body’s ability to move nutrients around faster, eliminate toxins, and also prevents fatigue and bloating by flushing excess water from your system.

2.    Whey Protein: Whey protein (comes from cows) is a complete, high-quality protein. It is also one of the best fuels for your metabolism.  Not only does whey protein boost your metabolism into high gear, but it also helps your body feel fuller longer.  Mix half a scoop into your oatmeal in the morning for the ultimate fat-burning breakfast.

More Foods that set your Metabolism on Fire and Boost Your Energy ALL day!

3 MORE foods that set your Metabolism on Fire and Boost your Energy All Day!

1.    Rolled Oats: With high quality combinations of complex carbohydrates, healthy fats, fiber, and protein, rolled oats make a pretty near PERFECT meal in the morning. Mix in some whey protein and flaxmeal, and you’ve got the best metabolism-boosting elixir around!  The morning is the optimal time to eat rolled oats because your brain and body need the carbohydrates most at this time – after you’ve been fasting for 6 hours or so.

2.    Salmon: Research suggests that while saturated fats (like those found in deep-fried foods) appear to promote weight gain, the healthy omega-3 fats found in cold water fish, such as salmon (and tuna), actually reduce the risk of becoming obese and improve the body’s ability to react to insulin. How can “fat” help make you slimmer? Well, the omega 3 fatty acid (EPA) found in Salmon stimulates the secretion of leptin, a hormone that regulates food intake, body weight and metabolism, and aids in the break-down of unwanted fatty tissues.  The healthy oils found in salmon have also been shown to reduce inflammation in your joints, and to improve circulation and heart health.

3.    Spinach: Popeye ate spinach, and so should YOU! Spinach really does make you stronger too – it is loaded with antioxidants that help repair damaged muscles. Spinach also prevents cancer-causing free radicals from damaging your body and your health. Spinach is also super high in iron (also great for women), vitamin C, potassium and magnesium.

More foods to eat that will boost your metabolism

MORE foods that set your Metabolism on Fire and Boost your Energy All Day!

  1.    Green Tea: Green tea is one of the best metabolism-boosters you can drink!  In fact, green tea is one of the main ingredients in many expensive fat burning supplements on the market. Green tea also helps decrease your risk of cancer, reduces food cravings, helps maintain weight loss, and contains just enough caffeine to help get you going in the morning.

2.    Greek Yogurt: Greek-style natural yogurt is best; it contains much less sugar and much more protein than other varieties. But, any kind of low-fat yogurt (look for one with the lowest sugar content) also contains many pro-biotic cultures that are necessary for maintaining a healthy digestive system, and is high in protein and much-needed calcium (another great fat-burner)!

3.    Peanut Butter: Peanut butter is a diet secret. While it does contain a high amount of calories per spoonful (don’t eat it out of the jar), it also contains a ton of essential fatty acids, fiber, and even protein.  Try spreading it on a sliced banana, or on celery with raisins for an amazing study snack!

More foods that set your Metabolism on Fire and Boost your energy all day!!!

3 MORE foods that set your Metabolism on Fire and Boost your Energy All Day!

  1. Coffee: Although it does dehydrate (drink an extra glass of water for every cup of coffee you consume!), the most recent research about caffeine and coffee suggest many positive benefits. These include: Speeding up your metabolism, increased heart health, higher levels of concentration, and many more. Just don’t ruin it with tons of cream and sugar… or try adding skim milk and splenda!

2.    Eggs: Eggs are one of the highest quality protein sources available. They are also one of the BEST foods for boosting your metabolism, and should be part of every healthy woman’s diet! (Don’t go crazy here though – no more than 3-4 whole eggs per week, or your cholesterol might go through the roof.  Eat as many egg whites as you’d like though!)

   3. Extra Virgin Olive Oil and Coconut Oil: When cooking, you should never use any oil except for Extra virgin olive oil or Coconut Oil.  Unlike corn and vegetable oils, these oils contain the HEALTHY kinds of fat – those heart and brain-healthy omega-3’s.  Olive oil is also the HEALTHIEST salad dressing you could possibly use! (Add some spices to 1 tablespoon of olive oil for a killer dressing!)

3 more foods that will boost your energy and set your metabolsim on Fire

Here are 3 MORE foods that set your Metabolism on Fire and Boost your Energy All Day!

  1. Berries: I call them “nature’s candy”! They are naturally sweet, and are PACKED full of antioxidants, metabolism-boosting vitamins and phytochemicals, and cancer-fighting flavanoids. Blueberries and raspberries also contain lutein, which helps promote healthy vision.

2.    Cayenne Pepper: You may have heard people say that spicy food boosts your metabolism…. But are they right?!  Well, yes – as long as that spicy food isn’t from the greasy Mexican restaurant down the street.  The reason why cayenne pepper raises your metabolism is this: spicy food raises your body temperature, which then forces your body to work harder to cool itself down.  This “cooling” process actually requires calories…which thus generates a sort of “fire” for your metabolism.  So, if you can take the heat, GO FOR IT!  Sprinkle it (sparingly) on your turkey or chicken or on your lean hamburgers. You can even use it to spice up your veggies and your soup, if you dare.

3.    Chicken breast: Like turkey, this is a lean meat that no diet should be without!  Just don’t forget to remove the skin, and don’t eat it fried… as this totally kills all the health benefits.

Tony Horton / Birthday Weekend

Tony Horton and I at the Bryce Jordan Center in State College PA

Happy Monday!!! This past weekend was my birthday and the gift my husband got me was PRICELESS. He bought me a ticket to spend the afternoon with Tony Horton!!!

How?

Tony Horton came to State College, PA for the Health and Fitness Expo. I got a ticket to listen to him talk, have light refreshments with him, take my picture with him, get his autograph (twice!) AND I got to work out LIVE with him. The entire day was AMAZING!!! I loved every minute of it! Tony Horton is an amazing trainer, down to earth, and FUNNY guy!! I enjoyed listening to him talk and tell the truth even when its ugly! And the workout I did with him was amazing!! It was sweat from P90!! P90 is an amazing program for anyone and everyone of all ages, shapes, and sizes! This program gets you ready to take on anything and everything that you have been wanting to take, by starting you out slow and teaching you the moves so that you master the form! I can't wait to do this program. My mom actually started yesterday and loved it!

Week 1 of month 2 Insanity

Week 1 of Month 2 of Insanity will be over tomorrow and all I have to say is OMG!!!! Month 2 is no joke! All the workouts are any where from 45-60 minutes, they are intense and make you go to the MAX!!! I love the workouts though!! And honestly with all the changing around and intervals, you don't realize it is an hour workout.

With these workouts I have burned up to 600 calories during the workouts, I have noticed that I sweat ALOT more, and that I not only feel great after them, but I get HIGH off the accomplishment that I actually finished it.

The intervals are a minute longer and the moves are 15 seconds longer than the first month. However, on the 3rd round he doesn't end with a power move, he ends with a slower, bring your heart rate back down type of move. The moves are definitely more dynamic, intense, and more powerful.

I still say that this program can be done by anyone, AS LONG, as you go at your own pace and concentrate on your form rather than your speed! Month 2 is definitely harder, but I LOVE it! I love every workout in Insanity!! I can't wait for next month to do ASYLUM!!! haha I think I have officially gone CRAZY!!! :)

Foods that Set your Metabolism on Fire and BOOST your energy ALL day!

3 foods that set your Metabolism on Fire and Boost your Energy All Day!

1.    Almonds: Although all nuts are generally very good for you, almonds are the winner!  They are loaded with healthy fat, fiber, and protein, and contain just the right proportions of essential fatty acids that you need to raise your metabolism. Nuts are high in calories though, so don’t go overboard!  10 – 15 almonds equals one serving…. Not 50. Pine nuts, cashews and walnuts are also very good choices… but again, make sure you don’t eat too many.

2.    Apples: An apple a day is good for more than just “keeping the doctor away”; Apples are also great for keeping fat away! Each apple is loaded with 15% of your daily recommended fiber, which impedes absorption of glucose in the bloodstream to help regulate blood glucose levels by slowing the absorption of dietary sugar intake. Apples will also make you feel full longer, help keep your digestive system healthy and strong, and contain a plethora of phytonutrients that function as antioxidants. Apples are also the only fruit that contains the flavinoid “phlorizdon”, which has been found to play a key role in improving lung function, especially in women with asthma.

3.    Beans: Beans are loaded with fiber and protein that helps you feel full longer, and helps keep your digestive system healthy and active! Again, not TOO many though… or your roommate/boyfriend/husband might stop liking you.

Month 2 Day 1 of Insanity

Month 2 has officially started!!! And man did it kick my butt. I was seriously drenched from my head to my toes in sweat. The 60 minute workout was amazing, tough, and inspiring!! Why inspiring, because I have not done a 60 minute workout in a very, very long time. I was nervous I wasn't going to get through it BUT I did and I took each section one section at a time. I refused to look at the clock to see the time count down. It worked. The warm up was different then last month. It started out 4 minutes then 2 1/2 minutes for the second round and then 1 1/2 minutes for the 3rd round still making it around 10 minutes for the total warm up. The stretching was different too and didn't last as long as the first month. The stretch was about 5 minutes long. So that made for 45 minutes of intense cardio workout. This workout he did 3 different intervals. They were longer in time (45 seconds instead of 30 seconds each move, and they block1 and block 2 had a power move at the end where block 3 did not. All the moves were different, they were cardio, power, and resistance. Their were lots of combination moves on the floor, like ski abs, jump jack push ups, in and out abs, and spider lunges - all for 1 move. It was amazing. I am tired from the workout but I made sure that I took my R&R after!

This weeks schedule for Insanity is:

Monday - Fit Test and Max Interval Circuit

Tuesday -  Max Interval Plyo

Wednesday - Max Cardio Conditioning

Thursday - Max Recovery

Friday - Max Interval Circuit

Saturday - Max Interval Plyo

Sunday - Off

Excited to see what all these workouts are like!

Grain Free / Gluten Free Pizza Crust thats not Cauliflower

Dinner last night was amazing!!! Who says eating gluten free, grain free and clean can't be fun!!! I made pizza tonight for dinner and it was all clean, 21 day fixed approved, and gluten and grain free!

I used my tortilla press to make small individual pizzas. The crust was made from almond meal, water, and Quinoa Flour. Honestly, the pizza was better than any pizza I would have gotten any where else AND I just had gluten free, organic pizza the other weekend! And mine I think was much better and cleaner!!! I was able to portion it all out.

You can make it any way, but the way I made it was a white pizza with cheese, chicken, tomato and spinach!! It was delicious. I seriously could have it every night for dinner! :)

Recipe is:

1/2 Cup of Almond Meal
1/2 Cup of Quinoa Flour
1/2 Cup of Water

Mix all three together, stir and then if you have  tortilla press, split batter into 4 equal parts and make one at a time. If not tortilla press, place one part at a time in frying pan and cook each one that way. When done add topping and place in the oven at 450 for 5 minutes,

Tortilla Press

This is one of the wedding gifts we got for our wedding!!! It is amazing!! I love it! It is a tortilla press which allows me to make tortillas, flat bread, pizza crust, etc. Last night I made grain free, gluten free, corn free tortillas. They were amazing, and my Hubby who likes most things but is very critical of the grain free things I make, and he LOVED them.

All the tortilla is made of is 1/2 cup of almond meal, 1/2 cup of quinoa flour, and 1/4 - 1/2 cup of water. It makes 4 shells. The whole process with the tortilla press is no more than 5 minutes. Its that easy. And then on the shells, I put ground turkey, cheese, spinach, and salsa.

The next thing I am going to make is pizza crust with the press. Stay tuned to find out, how it turns out! :)
